Impeaching Trump

I have mixed feelings about the second Trump impeachment. No doubt he greatly deserves it for inciting a riot and insurrection to prevent the Congress certifying his electoral college loss. Five people died in the fracas including a Capitol policeman. The mob was seeking to kill Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence among others.

The legal precedent is clear that an impeachment can continue even after the accused is out of office. Several cases have done so in our history. Impeachment is not just for removal from office. If the Senate convicts they can then vote to bar Trump from any future Federal office or job. Such a bar will protect us from the malign impact of Trump running for Prez in 2024, or the horror of another four years of egomaniac Trump as Prez, God forbid.

Impeachment is a political process. Not a criminal trial. The test for conviction is whether Trump has so pissed off 67 Senators that they hate his guts. Trump has clearly merited conviction alone for the deaths of more than 400,000 Americans for his foolish mismanagement of the Covid 19 pandemic. Modeling bad behavior and making the wearing of masks a political statement has led to many more deaths and hospitalizations.

Still the more important work now is to fix the distribution and get the vaccines into the arms of the populace. Trump is just an old foolish con man who harmed so many, but has lost his job. He was the worst human being and worst prez in U.S. history. Those who still worship him will wake up some day. I am done trying to open their eyes. I won't waste my breath on fools. None so blind as those who will not see.

If you want to praise Trump do it elsewhere on your own blog. I delete pro Trump posts and ban the advocate. My blog, my rules. Express your love of this neo Nazi in your own space, not mine.

I'm afraid his supporters will never wake up... They love playing the victim. It's always someone else's fault, never their own. Kind of like how they always blame women for their own lack of attractiveness.

To call a self serving narcissist megalomaniac only an egomaniac is actually a compliment.

Considering how much money he owes the Russians, they may solve the problem for us, I doubt they subscribe to his self serving bankruptcy games.

As for people that will continue to buy into his divisive fiction based agenda, stupid is as stupid does.

This is informative and interesting and I believe that Trump, bar none was the most malicious, cruel and dishonest president we ever had. The not so hidden and troubling point here is that he has 75 million followers a movement that is no longer fringe but could be considered mainstream. If he is convicted and barred from office that "movement" will not cease...

I agree, while we need to move on and deal we the current calamity we also need to send a message that we cannot tolerate what has happened and remain a free and democratic country.

Please don't let me be misunderstood.

Time heels all wounds, but it's going to be an up hill battle for President Biden to repair what Trump has done.

Trump is the worst president ever and an even worse human being. Whatever legal consequences he faces in his post presidential life he greatly deserves. LOCK HIM UP

look at his game.. building a golf course in the bronx (ny) the prices was so high regular people couldn't go there only rich people, the sad thing about it , it was a bad place to put it and then no one goes there, also atlantic city, build a nice hotel and when it was time to pay the bank he went into bankruptcy putting lots of people out of work.  look at the golf course he build in scotland 1300 people out of work before of him and he sit there laughing about it. plus  his taxes, you know people have gone to jail for not paying their taxes and he feels he's privileged. another reasons nys is going after him. now this virus  it's bad and he has so many people believing that it's nothing the way he handle it was wrong, so many people died.

Good post. The only thing I find to disagree with is that MAGATs will eventually wake up and see what a con Trump and his agenda were. The very word chauvinism derives from Nicholas Chauvin who remained a die hard Bonapartist to his death long after Imperial France had ceased to exist. They will NEVER get it.

While the insurrection was a vicious crime, I think that it was a cathartic moment that broke the back of Q-anon, the Proud Boys and self-styled militia groups. Although the security was extremely tight for the inauguration, there were no groups of protesters' in DC or any of the other state capitals. Michigan had one lone, flag waving, pathetic protester. Yes, the FBI were tracking online chatter about violence, but nothing materialized.

With the idiot gone, shut down on social media, and these idiot small pockets of extremists scattered around the nation, the focal point has disappeared.

There has always been fringe whackos throughout history, but nothing large enough to be major threat.

If there are no consequences for riot and insurrection you encourage more of such acts.

I'm someone looking in for the UK, but i am amazed how Trump conned so many people. I know it seems so obvious that the guy was making money from these lies, but the people who donated to him are his victims and he should be held accountable for the mayhem and division he has brought to the US.

I say what I think in my blogs. If you do not agree that is ok. If you support Trump feel free to say so elsewhere.

I like sex but there is more to life than orgasms, sadly... Constant orgasms could get annoying after a few months.

Even if the proximate danger has been mitigated at the moment, there still needs to be consequences for choices and actions.

Aside from the obvious, if he wasn’t willing to call in the Guard while the storming was going on, or indeed actually considered trying to call out the Guard prematurely in order to keep counterprotesters (and other law enforcement?) away from his “good guys”, that represents something more than just “a protest that got out of control”. An approach where you’re dealing in the “second level” of what happens at the Capitol speaks to a wider-ranging plan, considered and developed, over a period of longer.

Some form of removal-in-absentia is needed because of what happened, to prevent the next wannabe-authoritarian. Without meaningful consequence in this case, essentially the message being sent is that you can try something like, or worse than, this right at the very end of your term - if it works you get to be the authoritarian who broke America, and if it doesn’t you get to just skip out the back door and go on with the rest of your life.

Looking in from outside the U.S., and I can’t see how it would be good for any type of functioning democracy (sorry, Russia, that doesn’t include you) to tolerate even attempting to take the country down that path, regardless of the other types of consequences “the perp” in this case is just starting to find in the other aspects of his life.

Sadly it looks unlikely 17 GOP Senators will join 50 Dems in the Senate to convict Trump. Too many put party over country these days. Trump's base and fund raising will keep the GOP under Trump's control. The filibuster in the Senate keeps McConnell able to control new laws.

I hope the New York DA can nail Trump on state tax fraud charges and cut down Trump's influence.

There is new evidence some right wing groups were organized and seek to kill legislators during the mob riot.
